Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Test

The Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) test is a blood test used to measure the level of alpha-fetoprotein in the blood. AFP is a protein normally produced by the liver of a developing fetus, but in adults, abnormal levels may be linked to certain medical conditions.

This test is commonly used to help screen, diagnose, and monitor liver diseases, including liver cancer, and some germ cell tumors. In pregnant women, the AFP test may also be used as part of prenatal screening to assess the risk of certain fetal abnormalities.

Doctors may recommend this test for individuals with chronic liver disease, those undergoing cancer monitoring, or during pregnancy as advised by a healthcare provider.
