- How it works: It binds to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, stopping susceptible bacteria from growing.
- Common uses: Bacterial respiratory infections, sinusitis, certain throat infections, skin infections, and other susceptible bacterial infections. It does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
- Common adverse effects: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache and dizziness.
- Serious/rare effects: Allergic reactions, liver problems, and QT prolongation/abnormal heart rhythm can occur, particularly in susceptible patients.
- Adult dose: Depends on the infection. Common regimens include 500mg once daily for 3 days, or 500mg on Day 1 followed by 250mg once daily on Days 2–5
