- Uses: Used to control type 2 diabetes along with diet and exercise, either alone or with other diabetes medicines.
- How it works: Increases incretin activity, helping the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high and reducing glucagon release, thereby lowering blood glucose.
- Instructions: Usually taken once daily, with or without food, as prescribed. Dose may need adjustment in kidney disease.
- Precautions: Monitor blood glucose and kidney function. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or a history of pancreatitis.
- Side effects: Headache, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, upper-respiratory symptoms and low blood sugar (especially when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas) may occur. Rarely, pancreatitis or serious allergic reactions can occur.
