  • Indication: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, to improve blood sugar control along with diet/exercise.
  • How to use: Usually 100 mg once daily, with or without food. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Use as prescribed.
  • How it works: DPP-4 inhibitor; increases incretin activity, helping increase insulin release and reduce glucagon, thereby lowering blood glucose.
  • Adverse effects: Headache, upper-respiratory symptoms/nasopharyngitis, nausea; hypoglycemia is more likely when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Rarely, pancreatitis can occur.
