- Drug class: Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
- How it works: Inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis, causing susceptible bacteria to die.
- Uses: Used for susceptible bacterial infections including respiratory, urinary-tract, skin/soft-tissue, abdominal infections, meningitis and septicemia.
- Common adverse effects: Injection-site pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, headache and dizziness.
- Serious adverse effects: Severe allergic reactions, significant diarrhea/colitis, and liver or blood-related abnormalities can occur rarely.
- Dose: Depends on the infection, age, weight and clinical condition. 1g once daily is a commonly used adult regimen for some infections, but the exact dose and duration must be prescribed by a doctor.
