- Drug class: Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
- How it works: Cefixime kills susceptible bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
- Uses: Used for susceptible bacterial infections such as respiratory/ear infections, throat infections and certain urinary tract infections. It does not treat viral infections such as flu or the common cold.
- Common adverse effects: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, vomiting, headache and dizziness. Skin rash or itching may occur.
- Adult dose: Usually 400mg once daily or 200mg every 12 hours. Treatment duration depends on the type and severity of infection.
- Important: Use only when prescribed/appropriate for a bacterial infection, and complete the prescribed course.
