  1. Generic: Cefixime 200mg/5ml, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
  2. Uses: Treats susceptible bacterial infections such as throat, ear, urinary tract and respiratory infections.
  3. How it works: Stops bacterial cell-wall formation, causing susceptible bacteria to die.
  4. Usual pediatric dose: 8mg/kg/day, given once daily or divided into 2 doses; exact dose should be prescribed by a doctor.
  5. Common adverse effects: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion and vomiting.
  6. Important: Shake well after preparation and complete the prescribed antibiotic course; avoid use in patients with serious cephalosporin/penicillin allergy.
