- Uses: A diuretic (“water tablet”) used to treat fluid retention (edema) associated with heart failure, kidney or liver disorders, and sometimes high blood pressure.
- Mechanism: Furosemide blocks the Na⁺-K⁺-2Cl⁻ cotransporter in the thick ascending loop of Henle in the kidneys, increasing the excretion of sodium and water and thereby reducing excess fluid.
- Precautions: Take only as prescribed. It can cause dehydration and electrolyte disturbances, particularly low potassium. Monitor blood pressure and kidney function when recommended.
