- Generic: Nimesulide 100 mg — a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with preferential COX-2 activity.
- Uses: Short-term treatment of acute pain and inflammation; regulatory guidance has also included primary dysmenorrhoea (period pain).
- How it works: Reduces production of prostaglandins involved in pain, inflammation, and fever by inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase enzymes.
- Common adverse effects: Nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, and drowsiness may occur.
- Important precaution: Nimesulide has a recognized risk of serious liver injury. EMA guidance restricts systemic treatment to the shortest possible duration, with a maximum of 15 days, and recommends avoiding it in people with liver problems.
