- Uses: Used with diet and exercise to control type 2 diabetes. It can also reduce cardiovascular risk in certain adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
- How it works: Empagliflozin blocks SGLT2 in the kidneys, causing excess glucose to be removed through urine, thereby lowering blood sugar.
- How to take: Usually taken once daily, with or without food. The 25 mg strength is generally used when appropriate after tolerating the 10 mg dose, as directed by the doctor.
- Precautions: Maintain adequate fluid intake. Tell your doctor about kidney problems, dehydration, recurrent urinary/genital infections, or if you are having surgery or prolonged fasting. It is not used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
